I didn’t want to be a downer but yes, I’m told he was on the way back from Oshkosh EAA. He was having problems with the prop and it failed. He figured he could make it home but didn’t. FAA report. http://www.aero-news.net/index.cfm?do=m…

I had a chance to read the report. Each blade of the prop has it’s own counter weight pisto. They discovered fatigue fractures in both counterweight brackets. and one bracket was broken. It appears they believed but cannot prove that the the counterweight bracket of the #2 prop failed. If that happens, the whole plane starts shaking horribly. I suppose that’s why he was throttling back and forth as he throttled back and stalled it.

I don’t think that the maintenance was an issue. The bracket failed, not the piston which he was lubricating. I guess there is a life limit to old stuff. I do note though the report also noted the mechanic had modified the counter weight bracket to allow more pitch. That may or may not have been a factor.

I don’t know if this is it but there is a picture of a 3 bladed prop with conterweights on this string http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php… Yes it is, go to the pictures below and you can see the weights. I suppose unless you disassemble the asswmbly, you would never know there was a problem till it failed.
